Story.
The history of the settlement is closely connected with the history of the neighboring city of Piran. The first farms and villas appeared here during the Roman Empire. In the 7th century, this area was part of the Byzantine Empire, then the Venetian Republic.
In the 11th - 13th centuries, the order of Benedictine monks settled in this area. In the 12th century there were already four monasteries in the region. In one of them, the monastery of St. Lawrence, already at that time the Benedictines healed rheumatic pain, ascites and other diseases with concentrated salt water and saline solution.
At the same time, churches were actively being built here, one of them, the Church of St. Mary of the Rosary (Santa Maria delle Rose), stood by the bay. And, according to legend, in 1251 the bay, and subsequently the settlement, were named Portus sanctae Mariae de Rosa - Port of Roses or Portorož.
The modern development of Portorož began at the end of the 19th century with the advent of fashion for visiting resorts. The leaders of the municipality of Pirano, in addition to the development of beach recreation, relied on treatment with brine and salted mud and were right. In 1885, after several years of successful start of the new tourism industry, construction of new complexes and villas began, and in 1890 the predecessor of the famous Palace Hotel was built.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Portorož became one of the largest seaside resorts in the Adriatic. And the new Hotel Palace, built in 1910, became one of the most sought-after in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, and the best hotel between Venice and Dubrovnik.
The active development of the resort was interrupted by wars and crises, the most protracted of which was caused by the Second World War and lasted until 1968, after which the resort infrastructure began to actively develop again, hotels, sports facilities and casinos were built.

I really love people who do something with love. Izy's family is exactly like that. It was very cozy there. By the way, the photo shows the view from the courtyard of our apartment. But that horizon line is already Croatia.
The only drawback (or advantage, depending on how you look at it) of our guesthouse is the extremely steep road to the sea, to Bernandin Beach. But it’s close to the store and you can go through the meadow to the other side of the ledge, to the beach, which is located outside the town of Piran.
By the way, in order to understand what Portorož is, it makes sense to talk a little about its geography. Although the route Piran - Bernadin - Portoroz - Lucia claims as many as 4 settlements, I would say that it is all one “big Portoroz”: 7 km of a leisurely walk along the picturesque coast, one area flows into another. I liked Bernandin - an area located exactly halfway between Piran and Portorož. As I already said, the slides there are not high, but steep. The architecture in Bernandina is certainly lacking.
A little about the sea in Slovenia. I'll tell you about the beaches later. The sea, of course, is not at all like the Mediterranean. Just Crimea, the Black Sea. Just as dark. Rocky bottom. Seaweed. Well, Slovenia is not very lucky with the sea. Although "unlucky" is a relative concept. It’s just that if you compare it with neighboring Croatia, it’s unlucky)). Slovenia has been part of various empires and states for almost the entire history of its existence. Now, as it is not very clear to many people who are poorly familiar with world history (and their own history too), many countries in the world did not exist some 100-200 years ago. There were peoples. Countries - no. This is fine. Not everyone even knows that a country like Italy (!) has existed only since 1861. Let's return to Slovenia and Pomerania.
During the Middle Ages, this part of the country was part of the Venetian Republic. All the ancient towns are identical twins of the same ancient towns in the Veneto region. Then the coast was under the Austrians and was called the Austrian Primorye. The main city of the region was Trieste, the main seaport of Austria-Hungary.
However, after the First World War, part of Pomerania, along with Trieste and the city of Gorica, passed to Italy. To be honest, for the Slovenians, this is still a wound that has not yet been healed.
They built the city of Novaya Goritsa near Goritsa. And Trieste... to make it clearer, for 40 km Italy has a narrow strip of land between the sea and Slovenia. These are all former "lost" territories. I heard that after the Second World War there was a chance to return these cities, but with a lot of blood, which the Slovenians did not agree to. Is it so? Now I know this for sure. Don't fight, people! And don't support the aggressors. Don't spoil your karma.
Now Slovenia has a very narrow access to the water - about 47 km, which the Slovenians decorated as best they could, from the heart.
Well, let's go to Portorož? We will consider it.
Portorož - port of roses. Doesn't it really sound like us? Is very similar.
Portorož became a resort back in the 13th century. Benedictines from the local monastery of St. Lawrence treated rheumatism and other ailments with sea water. And since the natural Sechovel saltworks are located near Portorož, the method of treatment with salts (don’t blame me, I don’t know how exactly) was also invented by the monks living here.
However, the most significant impetus for the development of Portorož as a resort was given in the 19th century by Giovanni Lugnano, who proposed using local concentrated salt water and local mud from the estuaries for treatment. The first “cool” sanatorium opened its doors in 1908, thanks to Orazio Pupini (Italian, as you can see). A trip “to the waters” to Portorož cost Europeans, with equal quality, a little less than to other resorts on the continent, so clients flocked here, which stimulated the construction of luxury hotels and casinos already at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is such simple but very effective marketing.
Portorož is called the Slovenian Riviera. True, here are the coolest hotel complexes in Slovenia, a wonderful promenade, and expensive shops. Although, if you compare these hotels and shops with the same Italian resorts... well, they are simpler. But I didn’t come here for luxury! Why do I need her? And for new impressions and beauty. And they are here! And, again, standing in a traffic jam on a narrow mountain road, I met a very wealthy German woman who has a yacht moored in Izola. She simply loves shopping in Portorož. Yes, and I bought myself a dress there. So there’s no need for me to cry!
What does the city look like? An embankment from which you can swim almost anywhere in the sea. Next is the main central street with shops and restaurants. Then - the first line of hotels. Further, I’ll be honest, we didn’t go very far, but there were also hotels and residential buildings there. The houses are modern. Hotels, as you understand, are no older than the beginning of the twentieth century.
The sandy beach itself is very inconveniently located - all the dirt from the water washes here with waves and currents. You shouldn't go swimming here, really. Other beaches are much better. What saves the sandy beach of Portorož somehow? Wooden bridges that go far into the sea. You can lie on the platform, on warm boards, listen to the surf, swim, going down into the water from the bridges. That's what most people do.

In the town of Lucia there is an excellent anchorage for boats and yachts, where lovers of sea holidays and citizens of different European countries keep their expensive toys. The parking lot is like a whole town - a hotel, a store, and restaurants. By the way, here, near Lucia, the beach is beautiful.
The Portorož embankment is undoubtedly its highlight. And it’s so funny, almost along its entire length - one big concrete bench. It's good there! They catch fish, swim... I really like the sculptures on this embankment and on the central street of Portorož.But the most pleasant place for swimming is Bernandin. Yes, a concrete slab and access to the sea from a ladder. But the sea is deep and clean. You can lie on the grass under the pine trees... Yes, that’s what I did! And watching a children’s birthday picnic, which was immediately held by local residents, is great!
By the way, Bernandin, if you are planning to relax at the hotel, is very well located. He stands as if on a pier. Those. on one side there is the sea, on the other there is a bay. I didn't look at the prices. Sorry. This beautiful sculpture is also Bernandin.
And here are the ruins of the church that gave its name to the area and the hotel. By the way, there are also shops and restaurants here. And there are quite a lot of Russian-speaking vacationers.
And on the beach there is a free “toy”, which is a toy model of the “Patriot Games”, etc. - i.e. an obstacle course that must be passed. It’s a cool thing, at least to climb on it, or even to watch those climbing. Well, what I got was just an advertisement for Portorož in general and Bernandina in particular.
What’s also great about Portorož is the water sports base located right there. These are the boats that maneuver around the bay in incredible numbers. They resemble a flock of funny animals that turn on command, go one way, then the other. But do you see that gray house in the background? Former salt warehouse.
In the evening in Portorož, it is best to go to a restaurant and enjoy really decent quality local cuisine. And it’s better if this restaurant is by the sea.
Surprisingly, I liked Portorož. I think because he has such a wonderful neighbor-companion as the ancient Piran, about whom further. I wouldn't mind coming back to Portoroz again. Somehow. On my way. And I'll stop at Izi's again.
